As fireworks light the skies this Independence Day, our sights are already set on a truly monumental moment – July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of American independence. With just one year to go, the countdown is on. On that historic day, the National Mall will serve as the nation’s front yard and center stage for the Semiquincentennial. This will be a once-in-a-generation celebration of American freedom, unity, and democracy.    

At the Trust for the National Mall, we’re proud to lead the charge with Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall, a national call to action to restore, activate, and elevate this iconic space. Through legacy restoration projects and inspiring educational and volunteer programs, we’re ensuring that the National Mall reflects the strength of our freedom and democracy and remains a vibrant symbol for the next 250 years – and beyond. 

This campaign is only possible because of strong public-private partnership. We extend gratitude to our partners and the team at the National Park Service and to our new Superintendent Kevin Griess, whose leadership and steadfast stewardship guide the care of this American treasure every day. As Superintendent Griess recently affirmed: “Our partnership with the Trust exemplifies what’s possible when we come together with a shared purpose. The National Mall is not just a place to visit – it’s a symbol of our democracy, and it deserves our very best.”

 The National Mall of Pickleball will celebrate America’s most accessible sport and the game that serves all in the heart of the National Mall this September

 
 

 WASHINGTON, DC – (June 25, 2025) – The Trust for the National Mall, Humana (NYSE: HUM), and the Humana Foundation announced today that the highly-anticipated National Mall of Pickleball is returning to America’s Front Yard, the National Mall, for a third year.

 From Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21, 2025, the general public can experience a weekend full of pickleball programming, activities, and community with captivating views of the Washington Monument and United States Capitol. Formerly held at the JFK Hockey Fields, this year’s event will be located at 12th Street NW, just outside of the Smithsonian Metro Station, with an expanded footprint including 11 temporary pickleball courts.

 The free, three-day event is themed “Moves That Serve,” which will celebrate the true and inherent nature of pickleball – a welcoming game that is inclusive, accessible, and fun for all.

As America’s fastest growing sport for the fourth year in a row, communities and individuals continue to prioritize their time on the court as they experience the positive impact it has on their mental, emotional and physical health. This year’s event will have dedicated programming that will bring these positive impacts to life through activities such as on-site pickleball lessons and clinics with pickleball pros, opportunities for walk on play, and advance court sign-ups.

The Trust for the National Mall, Humana and the Humana Foundation are partnering to create this dynamic experience to preserve and protect the National Mall for future generations. For over 100 years, Americans have gathered on the National Mall to play, learn, dream, and connect across cultures and generations. Ahead of America’s Semiquincentennial in July 2026, the event will help raise awareness and celebrate the National Mall as an iconic open space where people can gather to reflect on the National Mall and its history and meaning in our nation.

To demonstrate the power of connection, the Trust is once again searching for America’s Ultimate Pickleball Duos – pairs of picklers who have a passion for pickleball and the sense of community it brings. Duos will have until August 15, 2025, to submit their stories that highlight the role pickleball has served in their lives for a chance to play on Center Court in the Ultimate Duo Tournament at the 2025 National Mall of Pickleball. Eight duos will be selected from across the country to win an all-expense-paid trip to the National Mall of Pickleball. Winners will be announced in the first week of September. On June 6, 2025, the Trust for the National Mall hosted a commemorative sunset concert at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial marking the 81st anniversary of the World War II D-Day operation in Normandy. Audience members and families picnicking on the lawn joined us for a performance by a quintet from the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”  

As the sun began to set and the memorial tapestry depicting the cliffs of Normandy began to glow, guests also had the opportunity to meet members of our Volunteers-in-Parks program to tour the memorial and learn about the symbolism behind its features and design elements. In one section of the memorial, General Eisenhower can be seen addressing the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division – the first men to land on the Normandy Coast on D-Day.  Learn about how to become a volunteer HERE.

Trust Vice President of Programs Jeremy Goldstein welcomed the audience, thanked all of the volunteers in attendance and introduced Pershing’s Own, which played a series of medleys of songs representing the Eisenhower era and patriotic American classics.

The Trust raises funds and partners with the National Park Service to support and expand educational and volunteer programming at the memorial and to grow the Dwight D. Eisenhower preservation fund. We work to activate and elevate sites across the National Mall to help the public connect more deeply to our nation’s history and the meaning behind this iconic American commemorative space.

The Trust is working in partnership with the National Park Service to expand our award-winning volunteer program at the Eisenhower Memorial and at sites across the National Mall.  The Trust for the National Mall is grateful to all who support and follow our work to restore, preserve and enrich America’s Front Yard for generations to come.

The Trust for the National is proud to announce its latest corporate partner for Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall – the Trust’s unprecedented campaign raising $250 million in honor of America’s 250th in 2026. The campaign will fund transformational restoration projects, educational experiences and volunteer opportunities to ensure the National Mall endures, educates and inspires for 2026, and for generations.

Northrop Grumman’s generous gift will support the expansion of the Trust and the National Park Service’s award-winning volunteer corps, Volunteers-in-Parks (VIP), to help welcome and guide visitors on America’s Front Yard.

 The Trust is grateful to Northrop Grumman for its commitment to volunteerism – both for its financial support and for the company’s recent “Mall Hands on Deck” day of service. Employees from around the Washington D.C. area spent a day volunteering to help beautify the gardens at the World War II Memorial, planting a new pollinator garden in the heart of the National Mall.  

Earlier this year, during an annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, the Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service recognized Northrop Grumman for its commitment to the Volunteers-in-Parks program. Led by the Trust and the National Park Service, this corps of 300 dedicated individuals plays a vital role in helping National Park rangers bring America’s Front Yard to life for the millions who visit each year.

This spring, the Trust for the National Mall joined the White House Historical Association for a convening on its upcoming work to restore and elevate Lafayette Park at the White House. The Trust and its partners at the National Park Service briefed neighboring organizations, sharing plans for the restoration and beautification of Lafayette Park and inviting corporations, philanthropists and organizations in attendance to work together to support this critical project. The briefing welcomed over 60 representatives of business, culture and the arts, churches and non-profits to learn about ways to support the Trust for the National Mall’s plans to restore and maintain this historic park for America’s 250th in 2026.

The Trust is raising $13.6 million to restore historic Lafayette Park to its original grandeur. Inviting Lafayette Square community and all corporations and philanthropist to join us to help raise critical funding to revitalize the park’s iconic fountains that have not flowed for nearly a decade, and upgrade the park’s plantings, furnishings and walkways to restore this once majestic space. 

The project is part of the Trust’s historic initiative for America’s 250th anniversary— Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall. The Trust is partnering with the National Park Service to lead transformational restoration projects on the National Mall and at the White House Gardens and Grounds and creating unique civic learning experiences and volunteer programming to meet the 50 million visitors who travel to Washington in 2026…and for generations to come. 

“The beautification of Lafayette Park is a signature project of our recently launched campaign for America’s 250th on the National Mall and at the White House Gardens and Grounds,” said Trust President & CEO Catherine Townsend. “With your help, this historic and iconic space will be transformed to once again become a majestic space connecting the White House to Washington…and to the world.”

As the White House Historical Association President Stewart McLaren shared, “Lafayette Park is most often the place visitors from across the country and around the world gather to see The White House. Lafayette Park is the centerpiece and heart of the President’s neighborhood. In recent years it has fallen into disrepair. It should be an extension of the North Lawn and a pristine and well maintained part of President’s Park, the White House campus.”

About the Project

Located just beyond the White House gates along Pennsylvania Avenue, this formal park and its legacy date back to Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s original plans for the city and the American Revolution. Today, the park is the place where many visitors first glimpse the White House. This overlooked greenspace, its canopy of trees, classic formal pathways and signature fountains have fallen into disrepair and need to be restored to befit the park’s history and its prominent location.

As part of the Trust for the National Mall’s “Our Monumental Moment” Campaign, inspired by the celebration of America’s Semiquincentennial and the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, the Trust’s restoration project will:

  • Restore the beauty of the Park’s signature fountains

  • Beautify the park’s garden elements and green spaces

  • Refurbish seating and site furnishings

  • Create safer and more elegant walkways

  • Restore light fixtures to ensure a safer, well-lit park space

  • Provide for the care and maintenance of the park for the future

Lafayette Park will become a more vibrant and welcoming space connecting visitors to the White House, the city of Washington D.C., and the nation, for America’s 250th in 2026…and beyond.

The Trust for the National Mall kicked off a new series on May 19, 2025, reprising its Monumental Conversations series with the new theme “On the Road to America’s 250th” in celebration of the upcoming U.S. Semiquincentennial. This rooftop reception and conversation overlooking the National Mall featured a discussion with Pulitzer Prize winning writer and #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Revolution Trilogy Rick Atkinson.

The event previewed Atkinson’s upcoming release The Fate of the Day, which chronicles the spectacular history of the battles between the Americans and the British—debuting as a #1 bestseller on the New York Times Book List earlier this month.

The evening’s emcee was Eric Hoplin, Trust for the National Mall board member and President/CEO of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW).

Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky, presidential historian, noted author and executive director of the George Washington Presidential Library joined in conversation with Atkinson, digging deeper into the stories and moments in history that helped Atkinson build the compelling narrative of the second book in his Revolution Trilogy.

“We're the beneficiaries of an enlightened political heritage handed down to us from that revolutionary generation…we cannot allow that precious heritage to slip away….And it’s a central reason to commemorate the 250th” — Rick Atkinson

Atkinson and Dr. Chervinsky also welcomed questions from the engaged audience sharing a glimpse behind the history told in their books, how they have connected with historical figures in their books, sharing humor and insights about how their books go from research to first draft, to final draft and onto the bookshelf.

The event of the season welcomed a glittering crowd of nearly 600 partners and champions to celebrate and support America’s Front Yard. Against the backdrop of the soaring Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol, we came together on the National Mall to honor our nation's history and look ahead to the celebration of the U.S. Semiquincentennial—America's 250th anniversary in 2026. The Trust for the National Mall officially launched Our Monumental Moment: The Campaign for the National Mall —Raising $250 million in honor of America’s 250th to restore, preserve and elevate the National Mall for 2026…and beyond.

Trust CEO Catherine Townsend and Board Chair Bruce Broussard announced the Our Monumental Moment campaign along with National Park Service Superintendent for the National Mall Kevin Griess and Trust Board Vice Chair, Sheila Johnson, and debuted a new Our Monumental Moment campaign video, watch here. 

The Trust recognized the Leadership Circle campaign partners — early champions of this important work for America’s 250th — including lead partner Humana, HP, Inc, and The Home Depot, represented by CEO, Ted Decker, who spoke about what inspired The Home Depot to join the campaign and encouraged others to join. Additional generous partners were also recognized on stage, including GE Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, and Caterpillar. Get involved and support the campaign here!

Honorees and featured speakers, including CNN’s Pamela Brown shared personal reflection and connection with the National Mall as the sun set behind the Washington Monument.

  •  The Honorable Doug Burgum, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, offered a compelling reflection on the significance of our public lands and civic spaces and a tribute to the National Mall and America’s 250th.

  • History, Heroes & Hope honoree and NFL Washington Commanders owner, Josh Harris, gave meaningful acceptance remarks sharing a personal connection to Washington D.C. community and the National Mall and its symbolism in our nation. Tributes by David Rubenstein, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and childhood friend and Washington, D.C. entrepreneur Mark Ein were rooted in Josh’s commitment to philanthropy, especially in Washington, and his deep ties to the power, meaning, and symbolism of the National Mall. This honor was celebrated by Marjorie Harris, Sylvia Harris, and the Harris family, Harris Philanthropies, and the Washington Commanders and NFL leadership.

  • Three members of Congress — Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Rep. Robert Aderholt and Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman — who are members of our National Mall 250 Congressional Committee were recognized on stage and presented America250 Chair, Rosie Rios, with her History, Heroes & Hope Award — Chair Rios highlighted the America250 national organization's strong partnership with the Trust, for the upcoming national commemoration.

  • Trust Founder and Chair Emeritus John E. “Chip” Akridge and Trust champion Sally Akridge were celebrated and recognized by several speakers and received the evening’s biggest standing ovation.

As David M. Rubenstein, a longtime champion of the Trust and member of our National Mall 250 Cabinet, reminded us, we all must play a role in preserving the National Mall for the next generation. Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2025) – This Earth Day marks the launch of a new recycling initiative at the National Park Service(NPS) National Mall and Memorial Parks (NAMA) in Washington, D.C., to help the public recycle properly at one of the most visited landmarks in the country. Starting on Earth Day (April 22), more than 1,000 recycling and trash bins across the National Mall — from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol — will feature the society-wide standardized labels developed by the nonprofit Recycle Across America (RAA), as part of a growing national movement to make it easier for people to put the correct items in the correct bins wherever they go.

The standardized labels are a key part of a larger recycling initiative and an impactful collaboration between NPS, the National Park Foundation (NPF), and the Trust for the National Mall. The initiative also includes the installation of six BigBelly solar-powered trash compactors and a new recycling truck funded by NPF. These new tools will support more efficient waste management and help keep this popular park clean and litter-free — especially as the National Mall prepares for increased visitation during the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

Since RAA began creating the first-and-only society-wide standardized labeling system for recycling, compost, and trash bins in 2010, more than 10 million of the standardized labels have been displayed on bins nationwide — including at major airports, national parks, stadiums, public spaces, businesses, 9,000 schools and universities, municipalities, and households. When implemented at scale, the society-wide standardized labels are proven to be one of the most effective solutions available today to eliminate public confusion at the bin, significantly reduce costly contamination, and help recycling thrive societally, economically, and environmentally.

“We’re so grateful for the opportunity to work with this thoughtful and collaborative group to help visitors recycle properly at one of the nation’s most iconic sites,” said Mitch Hedlund, founder of Recycle Across America.

“The National Park Foundation is dedicated to helping the National Park Service keep parks clean and litter-free through initiatives like Recycle Across America’s standardized labels. We’re proud to support this proven solution at the National Mall and more than 20 other parks across the country,” said Ashley McEvoy, Director of Resilience and Sustainability, National Park Foundation.

“The sheer magnitude of visitors, the amount of waste, and the unique challenges of this historic site call for a multipronged approach to successfully manage, divert, and recycle waste. We are proud to partner in these efforts to make the National Mall — America’s most visited national park — cleaner and greener for generations to come,” shared Teresa Durkin, Executive Vice President, Trust for the National Mall.

To demonstrate efficacy, a 2019 National Park Service pilot that added waste receptacles and implemented the society-wide standardized labels on all recycling, compost, and trash bins at Yosemite, Denali, and Grand Teton National Parks resulted in recycling levels doubling and contamination levels dropping to single digits at each park.

National Park Week 2025 

Honoring the Vital Role of the National Mall as we Celebrate National Park Week

As we mark National Park Week, we are reminded of the enduring power of our public lands to unite, inspire, and educate. Among these national treasures, the National Mall stands as America’s front yard — a symbol of our democracy, our history, and our shared values. 

For me and my family, the National Mall is more than a destination — it’s home. I’ve raised four children just a few blocks away on Capitol Hill. While many know the National Mall as America’s front yard, we’ve always lovingly referred to it as our backyard. It’s where my children played on the grass panels, attended inaugurations, participated in programs with their classrooms, watched fireworks light up the sky on the Fourth of July, and discovered the awe of standing before the iconic monument and memorials that tell the story of our nation. It’s a place of play, learning, reflection, and deep connection — not just for us, but for millions who visit each year. 

The National Park Service plays a vital role in preserving and maintaining this iconic landscape, ensuring that the National Mall remains a place where all people — families, students, educators, tourists, and citizens — can gather, explore, and reflect. Their stewardship is nothing short of extraordinary, especially in times like these, when federal budgets are stretched and the future of increased investment in our parks is uncertain. 

That is why it is more important than ever to reaffirm our collective commitment to this sacred space. Continued, robust federal investment is essential to protect and enhance the National Mall for generations to come. But the responsibility doesn’t fall on government alone. 

It takes all of us. The Trust for the National Mall exists to bridge the public and private sectors — mobilizing visionary philanthropy, corporate leadership, and volunteer engagement to support the National Park Service’s work. Together, we are not only preserving history; we are building a more vibrant, accessible, and meaningful civic space for the future.  

As the late historian and conservationist Wallace Stegner so eloquently said, “National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.” The National Mall is the living embodiment of that idea — a space where history and hope converge, and where all are welcome. It transcends politics. It is deeply personal, profoundly national, and beautifully democratic. 

These values are especially important as we prepare for a momentous milestone in our nation’s story — the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. As we approach this historic celebration, the eyes of the nation — and the world — will turn to the National Mall as the stage for reflection, renewal, and recommitment to the principles on which our country was founded. 

During National Park Week, we celebrate the beauty and impact of America’s parks — and we call on our partners in government, the private sector, and the public to stand with us in protecting the National Mall. Because when we invest in the heart of our nation, we invest in the spirit of our democracy.

The Trust for the National Mall marked the retirement of beloved U.S. Park Police Horse "Chief" on March 25 on America’s Front Yard. Supporters of the Horse Stables and Education Center project, Trust Board Members, leadership of the National Park Service, the U.S. Park Police, and the Mounted Unit, and Trust staff joined in the ceremony to wish “Happy Trails” to Chief the horse.

After eight years of service to the Mounted Unit, Chief is retiring to greener pastures. Chief was originally donated to the Mounted Unit by Sheila Johnson, Trust Board Vice-Chair and Chair of the Horse Stables Campaign, who joined the send-off and celebration at the Wells Fargo Education Center, with the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial as the backdrop. National Park Service Superintendent for the National Mall Kevin Griess, Chief of the U.S. Park Police Jessica Taylor and outgoing Head of the Mounted Unit on the National Mall Lt. Anna Rose also joined in the tribute to Chief the horse at the Stables and Education Center on the National Mall.

The event featured a tribute to Chief, the horse, by Sheila Johnson, Trust for the National Mall President and CEO Catherine Townsend, and a toast featuring a bouquet of carrots for the horse of the hour.

Georgette “Gigi” Dixon, Executive Vice President and Head of External Engagement, Wells Fargo, and Trust Board Secretary, also shared a tribute to Chief the horse and celebrated the success of the Wells Fargo Education Center that welcomes the public to meet the horses and learn about their service on the National Mall.

“As we say farewell to Chief the horse, who has enchanted countless visitors to the U.S. Park Police Horse Stables and Education Center, we also share gratitude for Sheila Johnson for donating this magnificent horse to serve on the National Mall and for her generous support of this project. We are grateful for all of the generous supporters, including Wells Fargo, who made this incredible facility possible. We wish Chief well in the greener pastures that await him in retirement".”

“Constitution Gardens: The park space just off the Reflecting Pool is getting a refresh, with 36 acres of gardens, an upgraded lake, a renovated memorial to the signers of the Declaration of Independence and new gathering spaces.

Ahead of 2025’s “Peak Bloom”, the National Park Service and the Trust for the National Mall held a Cherry Blossom Tree Care Media Availability to demonstrate how National Park Service crews care for the flowering Japanese cherry trees. And the Trust for the National Mall raises funds to help support the care of the trees and ensure they bloom each spring through its Adopt a Cherry Tree Campaign.

National Park Service crews pruned the trees, using ladders, loppers, snippers and woodchippers, part of the work that the National Park Service carries out year-round to ensure the iconic trees bloom year after year, and that this grand Washington tradition will continue blooming for generations to come.

NPS National Mall and Memorial Parks' Urban Forester Matthew Morrison shared details with journalists about the need for year-round maintenance (pruning, feeding, mulching and watering) which is critical to keep the trees and buds healthy and the roots protected so they can thrive and bloom for generations to come.

The Trust for the National Mall raises critical funds needed for the care of the cherry trees above and beyond what’s provided in the National Park Service budget. Supported by the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the Trust for the National Mall’s Adopt a Cherry Tree Program has a goal of raising $3.7 million ($1,000 for each of the 3,700 cherry trees) to help the National Park Service care for the trees and protect them for the next generation. This year, The National Cherry Blossom Festival Board of Directors has pledged that it will match the first $25,000 raised through their fundraising campaign this season. The Trust for the National Mall shares the following tribute to Lanny Griffith:

Lanny Griffith was the longest serving member of the Board of Directors of the Trust. Inspired to get involved by our founder and Chair Emeritus, John E. “Chip” Akridge III, Lanny was instrumental in shaping the early vision of the Trust nearly 25 years ago and helped secure our official partnership with the National Park Service in 2008. Lanny was a longtime supporter, and along with his wife Susan made a generous gift to support the restoration of the Lockkeeper’s House. The firm he helped found, BGR Group, was also a longtime supporter.  Lanny was a tireless champion for the National Mall and the Trust’s mission to restore, preserve, and enrich America’s Front Yard, the greatest symbol of American freedom and democracy. 

“Lanny’s leadership was critical to the Trust’s founding and the impact we are making today, and he leaves an important legacy on the National Mall. His kind, warm personality and gregarious sense of humor and smile will always be remembered.”

This year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival, March 20 – April 13, includes the popular Blossom Kite Festival and National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade.

CHERRY TREE FAST FACTS:

  • There are 3,500 cherry trees on the National Mall. Every year, approximately 90 trees need replacing.

  • The original cherry trees were planted in 1912, making this year the 113th anniversary of the cherry blossoms on the National Mall.

  • There are more than 36 million annual visits each year on the National Mall.

  • March 15, 1990, marks the earliest peak bloom on record while April 18, 1958, is the latest peak. Last year, peak bloom occurred on March 17.

LIVE Streaming Camera Shares View of Cherry Blossoms on the Tidal Basin

(WASHINGTON) – The Trust for the National Mall and National Cherry Blossom Festival are thrilled to announce #BloomCam  is now LIVE, featuring a bird’s eye view of Washington’s grandest springtime tradition from high above the Tidal Basin. Viewers from around the world can tune in LIVE to watch the beloved cherry trees on the National Mall bloom in real time. The National Park Service announced its prediction that this year’s peak bloom will fall between March 28th and 31st.

Each year, nearly a million people in countries around the world take in this monumental view on #BloomCam, the LIVE streaming camera located at the top of the Salamander Hotel DC, is provided in partnership with the National Park Service and EarthCam.

“The blooming of Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms ushers in the arrival of spring around the world and symbolizes hope, renewal, peace, and friendship. So many people have meaningful memories connected to this annual tradition.” explains Catherine Townsend, President & CEO of the Trust for the National Mall. “While visiting BloomCam.org, visitors can monitor the blooms from anywhere! And they can learn about our Adopt a Cherry Tree campaign that helps the National Park Service care for these ionic trees to ensure they bloom for generations to come,” Townsend adds.

The goal of #BloomCam is to build awareness and a wider community of support for the long-term care and upkeep of the more than 3,500 cherry trees on the National Mall. Located just beyond the White House gates along Pennsylvania Avenue, this formal park and its legacy date back to Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s original plans for the city and the American Revolution. Today, the park is the place where many visitors first glimpse the White House.

Lafayette Park’s Historic Significance

  • Originally named “The President’s Square,” Lafayette Park dates to the earliest days of the Republic, with President Thomas Jefferson an early advocate for improving the grounds.

  • Noted landscape designer Andrew Jackson Downing developed the park’s picturesque walkways and ovals in 1851, which today still frame the historic statues and garden spaces.

  • The statue honoring the Marquis de Lafayette, French Revolutionary War hero and champion of American independence for whom the park is named, was added in 1891.

  • Today’s Lafayette Park was created through a watershed preservation moment in 1962, when First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy intervened to prevent the removal of historic buildings that frame the Park.

  • Architect John Carl Warnecke conceptualized Lafayette Square, restoring the extant Madison Place and Jackson Place and adding stately new federal buildings to complement their historic character. Today, Lafayette Square and its impressive structures and facades now elegantly enclose Lafayette Park facing 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Lafayette Park’s Current Site Challenges

Signature fountains are out of order and have not flowed for many years. Project will fully restore the beauty of the fountains, replacing mechanical and electrical systems to ensure these features are efficient and sustainable.

Significant wear due to deferred maintenance and heavy foot traffic during the last 6 decades have damaged the historic brick walkways. Project will repair and replace missing bricks and repair damaged areas, improving aesthetics and safety.

Stewardship of the tree canopy has suffered from years of disease, stress, and limited resources. The project will care for existing trees and rejuvenate the historic canopy, comprised of native trees to the region.

Site furnishings and landscape elements are in critical need of repair and replacement. Project will improve seating for the overall visitor’s experience, in addition to restoring landscape elements that have been damaged or removed.
