The funeral procession of Isabella II, remembered by many today as “everyone’s grandmother”, was attended by thousands of citizens united in “silent mourning”. An atmosphere of solemnity that contrasted with the “hysteria” that once surrounded Diana’s death.

Already in the morning, one could see endless lines of people of all ages and from different parts of the world carrying bouquets of flowers – mainly sunflowers – with decorated cards and farewell messages, walking, in an atmosphere of respect, to Avenue de La Mall, where the procession then marched to Parliament.
