Hungary can no longer be considered a full-fledged democracy, according to a European Parliament resolution, which, beyond the symbolic rebuke to the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, also undermines its efforts to convince the European Commission to disburse much-needed sums for Budapest.

In a resolution backed by 81% of MEPs present, the European Parliament said Hungary had become a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy”, due to attacks on fundamental rights and the rule of law.
