Mexico City, September 19 (EFE).- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 shook central Mexico on Monday, just on the anniversaries of the September 19 earthquakes in 1985 and 2017, considered the two most destructive in recent history.

The earthquake struck at 1:05 p.m. (6:05 p.m. GMT) with an epicenter 63 kilometers south of Coalcoman, in Michoacán state, western Mexico, according to preliminary information from the National Seismological Service (SSN). ) from Mexico.

Initially, the SSN had placed the magnitude at 6.8, to revise it soon after.

“We are going to start collecting information, we sincerely hope that nothing serious has happened,” said the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in a first message from the National Palace.

The phenomenon occurred less than an hour after the national macro exercise organized at 12:19 p.m. (5:19 p.m. GMT) to commemorate the earthquakes of September 19, 1985 and 2017.

“Emergency protocols have been activated due to the earthquake recorded this afternoon in Michoacán. The Civil Protection of Michoacán remains on alert, ”wrote the government of this state, where the epicenter occurred, on Twitter.

While Mexico City Prime Minister Claudia Sheinbaum reported that “so far no damage has been reported in the city”, where “five condors from the Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat continue to fly overhead”.

“Noticeable earthquake. Seismic alarms sounded. Condors flying overhead. See you at C5. So far, no damage has been reported. More information in a few minutes. The earthquake continues, keep calm,” the president of the capital said on Twitter.

Other southern and Pacific Mexican features, such as Colima and Jalisco, also reported that the earthquake was noticeable.

A memory engraving

A few hours earlier, President López Obrador had led a ceremony in memory of the victims of the earthquakes of September 19, 1985 and 2017.

On September 19, 1985, the earthquake occurred at 7:19 a.m. local time (12:19 GMT) with a magnitude of 8.1 and with its epicenter in the state of Guerrero, in the south of the country, and made more than 20,000 dead, most of them in the Mexican capital.

On the same date, 32 years later, On September 19, 2017, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 and whose epicenter is between Puebla and Morelos (center of the country) killed around 370 people.including 228 in Mexico City.
