Lugo, Sep 21 (EFE).- The Breogán river was unable (76-64) with the host of its preliminary phase of the FIBA Basketball Champions League (BCL), the FMP Meridian of Belgrade , who escaped, in the first round, from the dream of competing in the ‘Champions’.
In the second continental experience in its history (they played in the Korac Cup in the 1985/86 season), Lugo’s side, with Ethan Happ and Jonathan Kasibabu as standouts, entered the break with an advantage and good feelings, but a two-sided third quarter, 9-0 in his favor at 21-3 against, sent him out of the tournament.
Without Víctor Arteaga or Germany’s Justus Hollatz, who joined the Belgrade team after playing Eurobasket with his country, Breogán had to counter Meridian’s inspired start, which forced Veljko Mrsic to stop the match with 10- 6 every three minutes.
The people of Lugo reacted by losing one (12-11, m.6) with a triple from Nenadic and Brajkovic, with a 2+1, brought the people of Lugo back to the scoreboard to reach the end of the first quarter -time three down (20-17).
The Galician team started strong at the start of the second act, with a 0-5 that put them ahead for the first time in the game (20-22, m.12) with a basket from Happ.
Le Meridian responded with an 8-0 run (30-24, m.15) against a lackluster Breogán on shots from three (1 of 8 at the time), until Kasibabu imposed his physique before the break to reach intermission two up. (32-34) with a hat-trick (second of the match) from Bamforth and a free kick from Sergi Quintela.
Mrsic’s men embroidered it after the break, solid in defense and efficient in attack with a resounding 0-9 to take off on the scoreboard (32-41, m.22). The lead reached ten points with a hat-trick from Nakic (34-44, m.23).
The Serbs woke up starring in a brilliant comeback: they got to two with a triple from Valinskas, they neutralized with a two-man basket from Jankovic, ex Breogán (46-46, m.27), they turned with a triple from Frazier (m. 28, 49-47) and the advantage continued to grow (55-47) with a 21-3 before entering the fourth quarter.
A hat-trick from Nenadic (55-50) reinvigorated the visitors, but, without Kasibabu, they went through a critical moment that even a timeout from Mrsic failed to save (67-56, m.36).
The Serbs went up twelve (71-59, m.39) and closed their pass in the next round; Breogán packs his bags to go home and focus on the Endesa League.
