Madrid, September 22 (EFE).- The newsrooms of 60 publishing groups in Spain that encompass more than 140 headers will begin this Thursday to offer a selection of their content through Google News Showcase. This is a new service that will deliver current information through the Google News and Google Discover services.

With this move, the tech giant is setting up a licensed online content program that allows Showcase-integrated media to select and present the news they find most interesting in a panel with their header. and their brand image.

Since the global launch of Google News Showcase in October 2020, more than 1,700 media from twenty countries have joined the project

Journalists from participating media generate and curate the news on their screens, which refer readers to the full stories on their respective web pages.

The public can access the panels through the Google News news aggregation website – on Android, iOS and web-enabled devices – and Google Discover – on Android and iOS.

Google News Showcase pays media outlets for their content

Each of the media integrated into Google News Showcase has signed an individual license agreement with Google, whereby the multinational financially compensates news companies for access to a limited amount of the content they generate.

Sources from the Mountain View, Calif.-based company point to news writers’ ability to select “quality” and “more relevant to users” content presented in a panel with its own header .

Regarding the economic terms of the agreements with the information companies, the company specifies that the agreements will be “the fairest and most equitable with each publisher” according to their contribution. He points out that the criteria shared with the headers that will govern the content will be to increase the quality of current information on the Internet with relevant and current stories to reach “more citizens” and “better informed”.

The same sources warn that adhering media must abide by Google’s misinformation policy. No remuneration will depend on the visibility or not of each of the news. This means that low-quality content with hooks (known as “clickbait”) produced to get more visits “will not impact economic conditions”.

According to data from the multinational, since the global launch of Google News Showcase in October 2020, more than 1,700 media from twenty countries have joined the project. Among them are Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Colombia, Germany, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Portugal, Italy and Argentina.

Google News returns to Spain after eight years of absence

Google News resumed its activity in Spain last July, after a break of almost eight years of inactivity and coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the project. At the end of 2021, the European copyright directive was transposed into Spanish law by royal decree.

This reactivation means that all publishers who follow the news content policies can appear in Google News and other aggregators.

Each publisher can negotiate with Google its terms with the reactivation of the news aggregator, which entities such as the Federation of Journalists Associations of Spain have criticized. It demands that negotiation with the tech giant be done through collective entities and not privately.
