Barcelona, September 21 (EFE).- If yesterday the Venezuelan director Gustavo Dudamel was the protagonist of the evening, today at the Gran Teatre del Liceu the cast of “local talent” and “zero kilometers” of a “Don Pasquale” has triumphed, by Gaetano Donizetti, directed by the Venetian Damiano Michieletto.

Opera buffa with which the second season of the 175th anniversary of the bullring of La Rambla was inaugurated, the maestro Josep Pons was in charge of the musical direction, with an audience that applauded the interpretations of the Spaniards Carlos Chausson (Don Pasquale), Sara Blanch (Norina) and Xabier Andauga (Ernesto), as well as the Polish Andrzej Filonczyk (Dr Malatesta), in a production that brings to the present day the story of the rich and greedy old man Don Pasquale, who has decided to marry a young wife and look for an heir because he is disappointed with his nephew Ernesto.

The production premiered at the Paris Opera in 2018, with melancholic overtones, although one of the great titles of the Italian comic repertoire, places the characters in a kind of house, which is seen from different angles, on a stage revolving, with the use of elements such as puppets or chroma key, so that at one point Norina is in a convent praying and at another, in the final part, in a forest.

Precisely, the chroma highlights the changes of scene, in an opera whose background is the message that changes are inevitable and that one must be flexible in the face of them.

The audience, with applause that lasted about six minutes, particularly rewarded Sara Blanch, the soprano from Tarragona who made her debut at the Liceu in 2017 and is on the rise, with two roles in the arena of La Rambla la last season, the Zerbinetta of “Adriane auf Naxos” and queen of the night in “The Magic Flute”.

The debut on this stage of Xabier Anduaga from San Sebastián, in jeans and sneakers defending his role as Ernesto in love, did not go unnoticed either, while Carlos Chausson from Zaragoza once again showed his solvency as a baritone- bass in an opera buffa, which some considered the “greatest musical of all time”.

With a Norina who transforms into a tsunami, who dismantles everything in her path, she leaves Don Pasquale nailed in a unique scene in the opera of his time, since it is she and not he who nails a slap that resounds in this montage in the stalls and leaves the former protagonist wanting to jump into the river and drown.

Gala evening, as is customary at the start of the season, today the photographic parade of illustrious guests took place for the first time in front of the “Constellations”, the doors designed by the sculptor Jaume Plensa at the entrance to the Liceu , in front of the famous Rambla de Barcelona.

In the box, three ministers, Miquel Iceta, José Luis Escrivá and Diana Morant; the ministers of the Generalitat, Natàlia Garriga and Lourdes Ciuró, as well as the former presidents of the Generalitat José Montilla and Quim Torra, as well as the president of the Gran Teatro del Liceu, Salvador Alemany.

They also didn’t miss the appointment with ‘Don Pasquale’, the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau; the government delegate in Catalonia, Eugènia Gay, different councilors from the consistory, deputies of Parliament, as well as the president of the port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet, and a large representation of companies with names such as Javier Godó, Josep Oliu, Maurici Lucena, Antoni Brufau, Angel Simón, Helena Guardans, Xavier Puig, Isabel Suqué and Tatxo Benet.
