Valladolid (EFE).- The linguistic economy that he applied to his work also extended Miguel Delibes to the paper where he always wrote by hand: sheets made with paper left over from the reams where El Norte de Castilla was printed, which, due to its composition, deteriorates easily and has serious conservation problems.

For this reason, the purpose of Miguel Delibes Foundation to restore, from 2023, all the manuscripts of his books which he keeps in his archives, including that of “El hereje” (1998), a novel which will be a quarter of a century old next year and which will be the subject of ‘attention preferential treatment with great exposure.

Historian Mario Crespo, author of the edition and critical study of “El hereje” published by the Cátedra label, will be the curator of this exhibition which will open in the last quarter of 2023 with a triple philosophical, historical and geographic based on original collections from various records.

It will show the reality of Castile in the 16th century, a time when this plea for freedom of conscience is inscribed, which Delibes signed at the end of his life and his work, and which is part of the Protestant hearth then existing in Valladolid, harshly repressed, explained the director of the Miguel Delibes Foundation, Fernando Zamácola.

This exhibition, without location at the moment and which will coincide with the opening of the new headquarters of the foundation, will remain open “five or six months” and will initially include a restored manuscript of “El hereje”, with more than sixty- ten pages affected by a flood of water from which the writer’s house suffered in June 2011.

With the exception of “The shadow of the cypress is long”, the first novel “the foundation keeps all the manuscripts” which, due to the acidic composition of the paper used by Delibes, deteriorate easily, explained Zamácola during a press conference in which he presented the activities planned for the academic year 2022/2023.

Among them is the digital edition of a dictionary with terms, expressions, words and phrases included in novels, essays and articles related to peasant speech, topography, flora, fauna and hunting jargon, among others.

Another of the planned activities is the broadcast, from October 5 on the La 8 Valladolid channel of Radio Televisión Castilla y León, of short readings, lasting two or three minutes, of fragments of works by Miguel Delibes which will be interspersed with programs and institutional representatives, the cultural world and citizens will be honoured.

“We want to show that we are all readers of Delibes” while promoting the reading and knowledge of his works, and “show his connection with all sectors of society”, he specified.

“Voices of Delibes”, the motto of this initiative, will initially consist of 45 videos that will circulate for about a year and a half.

October 17, date of birth of the writer, will begin in Molledo (Cantabria), birthplace of “El camino”, eight intergenerational meetings between adults and adolescents to exchange knowledge.

Finally, among other activities, the Miguel Delibes Foundation will open on October 14 in Valladolid the exhibition “Beyond the novels”, produced by the Community of Madrid and focused on theater and cinema as personal and literary axes of the novelist .

His link with cinema as an amateur actor, extra, dubber, critic and cartoonist, will share the thematic space with other spaces dedicated to the theatrical and cinematographic adaptations of his novels, and will include as a novelty the screening of “El camino ” (1963), the first film version of a Delibes story directed by Ana Mariscal and got her son back.
